George W. Cable published an essay on Mark Twain in 1870, and he spoke forty years later at the memorial service held after Mark Twain's death. The two men were acquainted after 1881 and during four months in 1884 and 1885 they traveled together over the Eastern states, the Mid-west, and part of Canada sharing the same platforms to read from their works. This book reports in full this long and for a time very close relationship between two important American authors. The report is fullest for the period of the joint reading tour. The letters the men wrote from the road recounted even the smallest incidents in the halls, at the hotels, and on the trains; and with uncommon intimacy the letters reflect the personalities of the two men and the opinions each held of the other. Several of Mark Twain's letters are printed here for the first time, but the greater number of the letters were written by Cable, who often wrote in their hotel while his companion was singing in an adjoining room, or in the retiring room of the hall while Mark was on the stage drawing waves of laughter and applause from the audience. These delightful letters reproduce both the fact and the tone of one of the most remarkable joint under-takings in our literary annals. A further result is that here is drawn a portrait of Mark Twain from an immediacy of observation not equaled in any other extensive comment left by his contemporaries.
